"Mathematics is the gate and key of the sciences.... Neglect of mathematics works injury to all knowledge, since he who is ignorant of it cannot know the other sciences or the things of the world. And what is worse men who are thus ignorant are unable to perceive their own ignorance and do not seek a remedy" - Roger Bacon

Education is imparted for achieving certain ends and goals. Various subjects of the school curriculum are different means to achieve these goals. Apart from enabling the students to acquire essential mathematical knowledge, skills, interests and attitudes, the teaching of mathematics has to help the students in many ways. The role of mathematics is important in fine arts and in beautifying human life, in giving students an insight into application of mathematics in other subjects and in helping them to become independent in learning.

Keeping these factors in mind, the teachers of the mathematics department of the school are doing various activities that are primarily to create genuine interest in the subject and sharpening mathematical skills in students. That is, simple subject activities that can be done in our classrooms or in the school environment like preparing mathematical aids and illustrations, organizing general and extra reading in mathematics, mathematical articles for the class magazines, relating the teaching of mathematics with other subjects, life activities and environment.

In today’s world, mathematical abilities are very much required to face any competitive exams. So the mathematics teachers are taking the responsibility to prepare them in an effortless manner. At the same time, we are trying to inculcate good values to the students and make them good human beings. The Mathematics Department of the school consists of 21 teachers in different sections from grades 1 to 12.

Objectives of Teaching Maths in Grades 1 & 2

In Grades 1 & 2 we try to make the study of mathematics a thrilling and interesting experience for our students. We introduce basic mathematical concepts like numerals and number names, place value, expansion of numbers addition, subtraction, multiplication tables, greater than, less than, time, shapes etc., through innovative ideas and activities. It aims at building real life skills in children.

Objectives of Teaching Maths in Grades 3 to 5

Students develop numeracy, knowledge of number facts and place values. They are able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Students get an opportunity to discover, reason and compare through the different group activities conducted in the classes. Students develop reasoning and thinking skill through solving various puzzles and identifying patterns. Students apply mathematics in daily life. They will be exposed to all uses of mathematics from counting out change or telling the time. Play way methods of teaching and learning are also included in the curriculum. Speed test contests enhance student’s accuracy and speed in calculations. One of the important aims of this level is to develop a positive attitude towards learning mathematics.

Objectives of Teaching Maths in Grades 6 to 8

In Grades 6 to 8, the students are introduced to other branches of mathematics like geometry, algebra, mensuration, statistics, and analytical geometry. The textbook followed in this section is NCERT textbook for classes 6,7 and 8. In addition to the prescribed textbook, each class has a practice book. Learning the above gives them an insight into the practical application of the subject in different walks of life. They realize the importance of learning math as it is interlinked with the different subjects in their course of study. Learning by doing is encouraged by different project works and group activities.

Assessments are done on a regular basis (written tests, evaluation of projects, class work and homework note books). Grading is done based on the performance of the above. Apart from regular examinations and class test, they are given opportunities to take part in ASSET examination, National Maths Olympiad and so on. As a part of co-scholastic activities chess competitions, speed tests etc are conducted under the patronage of the Maths department, which improves the mathematical skills of the students.

Objectives of Teaching Maths in Grades 9 & 10

Students learn more about algebra, geometry, mensuration, and statistics. Along with these, the students are introduced to other branches of mathematics like Euclid’s geometry, co-ordinate geometry, Trigonometry. The textbook followed in classes 9 & 10 is NCERT textbook and the method is activity-oriented teaching. The students are getting an opportunity to discover, think, reason and compare through the different group activities conducted in the class. The students master the concepts of mathematics very well and gain perfection in solving higher order thinking level questions. There are different types of tools used to assess the students under the new CCE system. The whole academic year is divided into 2 terms. There are four formative assessments and two summative assessments together. The formative assessments includes project work, PowerPoint presentation, chart making, Lab activity, work sheets, class works, home works, quiz, model making, seminars, class tests, group discussions, speed tests, puzzles, data handling, assignments etc with specific rubrics for different grades.
